We were interested in raising our own chickens for meat this year, AKA "meat birds". We were thinking of raising 10 or so. After I found out that you could get a price break if you ordered 50 birds I decided to call a friend that was planning on getting meat birds this year as well and see if they would be interested in splitting 50 birds so each family would have 25 each. And that is just what we did. :)
Just to clarify, we aren't cruel animal hating people at all. We wanted to raise the meat birds for a couple reasons.
1) We would know what the animal was feed.
2) We would know that the animal wouldn't have been given hormones and vaccinations.
3) We would never have to think about a poultry recall.
4) And lastly so we could learn the entire process from start to finish. Thus taking another step in being less reliant on BIG INDUSTRY to provide us with food.

Yes, the kids watch and or participate. We need them to know why we raise the chickens, why we kill them and what we do with them next. We would love for them to remember how to do this as adults and hope they can leave childhood with these memories and a confidence to do it themselves. At our house we only have animals that serve a purpose.
Dusty and Jon, they are cleaning out the parts we don't need and preparing them to be wrapped.
Here's Kevin and Jon at the sink Jon made for chicken slaughtering. We are a high tech operation around here! Check out that piping and faucet.
This was just to funny to not post...sorry Kathy, had to do it! hee,hee She is reaching her hand into the slaughtering cone and pulling the chicken out by it's feet.
Here's our friend Greg. He is plucking the feathers off.
Greg, Tara and Dusty in the back. She's the new model face of Chicken Slaughtering Magazine! The subtitle reads "YOU TO COULD LOOK THIS CUTE WHILE SLAUGHTERING CHICKENS" ha,ha
Our friend John got in on the hot dunking action.

Greg had lots of fun at Melissa's expense, he was making his chicken talk n' walk just to freak Melissa out. (They are husband/wife and left in the same car so I think it was all good.)
That pretty much sums up Chicken Slaughter Fest '09. The cows are next...
COMING THIS FALL TO A DAVIS BLOG NEAR YOU!

you crazy women! So next time are you going to offer spectator seating so that more families can come and learn? Or have you thought about branching out to be a mobile slaughtering house? So many options - that is where you can make some money!!!
Just spent some time updating myself on the Davis fam...and yes, the slaughter fest made me sad but I want to thank you for not making it too bloody...wasn't sure what I was going to see, I don't think I've ever scrolled down so slowly! ;o) Leia - I love what you guys are doing...does it sound strange to hear me say "I'm really proud of you!"? It's inspiring to see your family jumping in with 2 feet to the homesteading life...YOU'RE REALLY DOING IT!!! What satisfaction you must feel! Looking forward to visiting you guys soon - this week kinda got away from me so I'll be in touch for next week, K? Big Hugs! ~Amanda
We have been wanting to get meat chickens for awhile, thanks for making it seem doable. What was your start up cost? We were thinking about the end of August ordering, but don't even have a coop yet, so would need to get right on it. But you know how life goes, it keeps getting in the way. Plus, I am not sure where I would store the chicken after slaughter.
WOW!!!! How daring you are! I don't think I could do it. We have chickens for the eggs....and I think it would be so hard to watch them get slaughtered..let alone do it myself...ROFL!!! You are STRONG! :)By the way...love your hubby's name...My dad's name is Dusty too :) It's not a common name and I like it!
Hi, my friend Rachel sent me your blog site cuz we are doing chickens too. Hattie and I split 50 chickens and are doing the same experiment, only using the high schoolers at church to pluck! Your pictures helped so much, any thing else you could suggest to avoid or do when the slaughterfest arrives. I've read in my chicken bible that if you pluck immediately you don't need to dunk? Did you do 2 different slaughters or all 25 at once? Questions questions! Any help is appreciated as I think we might have been seperated at birth except I'm ancient:) Rebecca Brown
Rebecca~Dunking is really important. We would dunk for about 45 sec. to 1 min. then start plucking the feathers. If we didn't dunk long enough the feathers would come out!! :) So, pretty important...Helpful tips hummm...be prepared. Freezer paper, freezer tape, ice chests w/ice to store as you go, bags (we double bagged the birds) cleaning spray to clean as you go. Paper towels were very important. Trash can. Music, that was fun. Have some rockin' Christian music playing in the background, it helps take your mind off what your doing. :) Good Luck, I hope this helps!
Leia, thank you sooo much, we are going forward with 'fear and trepidation'! The supplies list helps a ton. How much do you think you spent per chicken by the time it was butchered. I'm finding this to be alot more expensive than I anticipated. Rebecca
Our project started off with high hopes that we would end up with a freezer full of cheap, organic chicken. The project turned into an expensive "hobby" about 1/4 of the way through. It was not cost effective for us to do this again. I wouldn't give up the experience that we got from this or the education that our kids got from this project. But I was very disappointed that BIG INDUSTRY can do this for cheaper than the little guys. :( To answer your question, I don't know exactly how much it ended up costing per bird. My guess would have been around $5
I totally agree that this is going to be about the experience not economics unfortunately. The food is killing us and I'm guessing we are gonna hit about 10 bucks a bird by the end :( I will let you know how our ag slaughterfest goes next month!
This was very educational! I never realized you could use traffic cones for this purpose but it make a lot of sense. I look forward to browsing the rest of your blog.
I'm Celebrating my 1 Year Anniversay on Etsy with a GIVEAWAY on my Blog. I would L♥VE it if you stopped in to check it out!
