The 5 & Under Club

This arrived today!! The long awaited picture of my nieces & nephew. I wanted to show everyone so bare with me, it's a picture of a picture. :)
So, starting on the left is my niece, Cora, she turned 3 in July of this year then next is Adia, my newest niece, she was born in Dec. of 2007 three months after Kaianah. Lastly is Jaden and he will turn 5 in October!
We were able to spend a little time with them while we were in Alaska this year and then we will be able to see them again in October. After October we don't know when we'll be seeing them again, mostly likely not for a least 6 months or more. :(

You kinda of see a piece of there little personalities in this picture. Cora is a lively, high-spirited child (most comparable to Josiah), Adia is all smiles (most like Kaianah), and Jaden is a mixture of calm and sweet (most like Austin). It's funny because when all the cousins are together they tend to play best with the ones that are most like them.

Money Saving Opportunity!!!

We are all trying to save money these days with the rise in gas prices, groceries, energy bills and then with housing market on the low side...well let's just say times are tight or tighter since they have always been tight for us. :) I'm not trying to turn our family blog into a big plug for all but this is family...

My Aunt Alice works for State Farm Insurance in Nampa, ID. They do auto, home, life health annuities, checking, savings, cd's home equity lines of credit, home equity loans, auto loans, credit cards, business accounts, all business insurance needs and much more. CD's are at 3.80 APY for only 9 months and HELOC's start at 4.50% our auto start at 4.59% Currently they are beating the rates of most other companies.

It couldn't hurt to call her and just get a quote, I personally don't enjoy spending money on "stuff" I don't get to see, touch or take home! If you referrer others she will give you a $10 gas card, and one for me if I referrer someone. So not only could you be saving hundreds of dollars a year but you could get a gas card for referring people. It's a win, win...

Idaho Storm

The weather in Idaho changes very rapidly...one minute it's 90+ degrees and the next minute you can find yourself in the middle of a big summer lightning/thunder show.

That happened today, and since Dusty was home he decided to send all the kids outside to watch. Kaianah and I stayed inside. The wind came just before the rain.

The kids lasted about 4 minutes outside before they decided it wasn't much fun, but Dusty wasn't going to let them off that easy, so they all headed for "the big van" to watch and listen to the storm from there.

Here are some pictures:

Can you see Alanah's hair?!? It's really windy!
She thought the thunder was really loud.

Are we having fun yet Dad?

Kaianah and I watched from upstairs, the girls have the best view in the house!

Josiah's going to Heaven...one day!

Alright, Dusty here...Josiah (4yrs. old) just accepted Jesus into his little heart. He was worried about dying for some reason and asked me how to get to heaven. I told him that he needed to accept Jesus into his heart and asked him if he believed that Jesus was the son of God who died for his sins and rose again.

Josiah said that he believed all that and that he wanted to have Jesus be his Lord and Savior. We prayed and he immediately went to tell the exciting news to his brothers. He was so excited! WOW, WHAT A BLESSING. THANK YOU JESUS!

VBS (Vacation Bible School)

Austin just finished his week at VBS and love it! Every year it's a different theme and this year the theme was Power Lab. Austin made up his own science professor name, he was known as "Professor Crack-Pop-Kin" all week. Austin came home on Monday after being at VBS from 9am-Noon and wanted to head out and buy a "lab coat" because the church was encouraging the kids to dress the part.
Of course the first question in my mind is how much is that going to cost? We came up with an alternative...of course we had to call Dad and see if it was okay first since it would require a little sacrifice on Dads part but he said it was fine. Here's some pictures of what we came up with. Austin played the part VERY well!!! He got nick named "Eyes" by the other professors.

Did you notice the pen in the pocket protector?

Yes, he is really wearing 4 pairs of glasses!

Burp Cloths!!

I found this local stay-at-home mom (SAHM) that makes these really cute burp cloths...I got 3 for Kaianah, and I LOVE them!! I was drawn to these because of the uniqueness, colors & the soft chenille backing. It's a great feeling supporting a SAHM and not Babies R Us or somewhere like that...These were a good price too.
This local lady also makes baby slings, blankets etc. She's got some opportunities in the works that I think she's going to go "Big" really soon. She also ships her products all over the United States if you are interested let me know and I'll send you her contact info. Here's some pictures of the ones I bought!! Did I mention that I love these!!!! :)

Here's all three...

A Challenge For YOU & ME!!

I have a challenge for our family and yours...I challenge you to avoid buying new things consumables aside. I challenge you to start thinking outside the box when it comes to buying items that you "need".
There are a ton of different ways to get what you need without going to the store and buying it new. Thrift Stores, Garage Sales, Freecycle, Craigslist, Classified Ads, Clothing swaps, online sites (ex. Ebay), trading with friends, "junk piles" at the stores (Home Depot has one in the wood area) etc.
If you drive past a business or residence everyday that has something you want, stop and ask them if you can take it off there hands or buy it from them. (of course, only for a great price) Chances are they just haven't taken the time to dump it and would LOVE for you to take it.
This challenge can be big or small, you decide. If the thought of this challenge is totally overwhelming, then start small and pick a couple days a week that you refuse to buy new things. Don't save it for a day that you will allow yourself to buy new but instead think of a way that you can get what you want without buying it new.
Are you up for it? Feel free to post a comment as your way of committing to the challenge and we can try to hold each other accountable or lend encouragement when we need it. If you have a great idea please share it!

Jammin'

I made freezer jam yesterday, it was really easy and VERY tasty. I used the raspberries from our garden to make the raspberry jam. This was different from traditional freezer jam, because I did boil it. A good friend of mine sent me an email with the step-by-step instructions...here they are; (Hope you don't mind Amanda! :)

1. "Process the strawberries (can be any kind of fruit) (rinse, cut off greens, cut in half - have the kids help, mine processed at least 3/4 of the 2 flats we've done so far)

2. Layer strawberries (2 deep) and sugar (over and over again until you run out of strawberries) in large cooking pot (I'm going to use Agave nectar this time, I used Fructose the first time and "fruit sweet" the 2nd)

3. Let sit for 8 hours covered (just on your kitchen counter)

4. Bring to a boil and mash (if you want the consistency mine was, if you want more whole strawberries then you wouldn't mash).

5. Let sit for another 8 hours (again, just on the counter)

6. Stir in "Freezer jam PECTIN" (it's a special kind, you can't just use regular pectin) - let sit for 30 min.

In the meantime, wash out jars and lids and dry completely.

Ladle jam into jars, add lids and stick in the freezer! You're done!

Karen taught me this 8 hour wait technique - it helps the berries naturally break down and the juices really come out. Plus it takes less time each day. I processed the strawberries in the morning one day, brought to boil that night (after 8 or so hours), and completed the process the next morning into jars. It was a nice way to break up the process...
