~~OUR OWN BEEF~~
So, many of you know that we've been raising "Burger" the family steer for over a year. Finally the day came to butcher him. He'll finally be giving something back to us! Here are some pictures from processing Burger to get him ready for the butcher.
So, honey next time a little warning would be nice, maybe a 1,2,3 or something!? Luckily it didn't freak all the kids out. :)
Kaianah isn't to sure about all this.

Oddly enough, that's kinda cool....considering I didn't have to smell it or look "Burger" in the eye before he died!! LOL
Great job, Davis Family!!!
wow! im both so sad (for the fuzzy cow) and so excited (that you will have pure, toxin and adrenaline free beef) for you guys.
Tell me how you got the kids ready for this. K is so sensitive that i could see him literally loosing sleep over something like this if we (I) actually got the nerve up to harvest an animal for food.
Thank you mama tulip. :) Sarah, we started telling the kids about where food comes from, then we started telling them the ways that Big Industry handles and prepares the meat we buy and then we told them the difference between the two. Since day #1 when we named our steers Burger & Tri-tip we've tried to prepare them for slaughtering day. Our kids ask us all the time for domestic pets such as a cat, dog or fish. I say okay, now lets think about what we will give them (cleaning up after them, buying food, play time etc) and now lets think about what they give us. (entertainment, mouse control but other than that not much) The raising of "animals with a purpose" really has to be an ongoing effort with the kids so they don't forget why we do what we do.
Even after all the prep talks with our kids our little Noah watched Burger die and then after about 30 minutes he said he didn't want to watch anymore and that it was gross. I totally respect that and told him he could walk away. Alanah (3 yr old) watched to but didn't want to stick around. All the others were fine with it.
