Straw bale cold frames for winter. I'm finally going to attempt the 4 season harvest. (Note the kids wagon in the background, that was what I used to haul the bales from point A to point B!! We are a high tech operation around here! ha,ha)

HIGH END GREEN HOUSE (ya right!)
Today's project:
Straw bale cold frames for winter. I'm finally going to attempt the 4 season harvest. (Note the kids wagon in the background, that was what I used to haul the bales from point A to point B!! We are a high tech operation around here! ha,ha)
I stole the bales from the COB project. The windows we got for free from a guy down the street. He was happy to see them go! The dirt came from a pile that was formed when we put up livestock fencing. The second window isn't pictured yet but that will go over the second open space. So, you are looking at 2 cold frames.

Leia,
What do you do about the cracks in the corners of the straw bales and between the windows and bales?
Also....how much dirt did you put on the bottom and did you have to add anything to it?
This is a great!
I overlaped the corners to prevent to much of a draft. Other than that I'm not worried about the cracks between the window and the bales. It needs ventilation...as for the dirt, I said that looks about good! No measurements or science involved. :) Cheap & Simply Girl!
I will get a single bag of potting soil and I'll add a hang full at each planting spot. (That way the bag will go further, I'm such a cheapskate) Hope that helps! See ya Friday for Bunco?? :)
what a great idea. i might have to copy you. i have a bunch of old windows..... unfortunately , i dont think any of them open.... they are very old school. I wonder how cheap i can get staw bales for? hmmmm..... perfect solution for winter planting!
you seriously need to post more . I love watching/reading your progress.
I want to do this up close to my house so I have closer access in the cold weather. I want some straw too, I hate to ask for more garden projects when our current garden is rather wild and crazy! My dh might think I am crazy to start another garden when the current one is quite an experiment!
Sarah~You could use the old windows and just prop them open with a stick for ventilation. LOL and posting more, I'm lucky to get done what I do get done. Time is the short crop! :)But glad you like reading up on us, maybe you need to start a blog so I can read up on what you're doin'!! Good idea. Oh and check out Craigslist for the straw, that's how we found our super great deal.
